Euro Spectroscopy 2018

Welcome Message to Euro Spectroscopy 2018

September 10-11, 2018

Stockholm, Sweden

Dear Colleagues, Researchers, and Friends,

On behalf of the 8th World Congress on Spectroscopy and Analytical Techniques (Euro Spectroscopy 2018) - an imminent international conference, I gloriously invite you all to join and participate in this spectacular international conference on spectroscopy and analytical techniques to be held in Stockholm, Sweden during September 10-11, 2018. Your potential research contribution flooded with an impulsive exchange of your novel scientific ideas will gorgeously bring forth the conference an enormous success for all intents and purposes.

As you are aware, Spectroscopy - the theme of the conference – is a study of how electromagnetic radiation interacts with matter. Therefore, in effect, it spawns a process of absorption and emission of electromagnetic radiation by the matter. Furthermore, the process includes the interactions between photons and particles such as electrons, protons, and ions, etc. as a function of their collision energy. Spectroscopic analysis with its wide flexibility and versatility has been crucial in the development of the most fundamental theories in physics, including quantum mechanics, the special and general theories of relativity, quantum electrodynamics, etc. Spectroscopic analysis is necessary to determine the structure and functional groups in organic compounds. Spectroscopy, as applied to high-energy collisions, plays a pivotal-tool in developing a scientific understanding not only of the electromagnetic force but also of the strong and weak nuclear forces. Certain types of microwave, optical, and gamma-ray spectroscopy are capable of measuring infinitesimal frequency shifts in narrow spectroscopic lines. The Frequency shifts can be observed with ultrahigh resolution laser-based spectroscopic techniques.

The precision analysis of materials, including low-dimensional condensed matter systems, is an area of significant importance in materials science and has caused an ever-increasing interest amongst the scientific community. An ideal approach to test our ideas about the physics of low-dimensional systems lies not only in traditional solids like metals and semiconductors but also in liquids, polymers and other organic materials, referred to as ‘soft condensed matter’. As the technological advances have been made, a wide range of analytical techniques has come up to characterize materials of inherent complexities that are markedly different from those of the bulk systems. Since each technique has its own characteristics with particular advantages over the other, complementary analytical tools are generally used for characterizations that are at least adequate for the purpose of the user. As a matter of fact, the complete characterization of a material is hardly possible in practice because of far more complexity of the low-dimensional nanostructures. With the rapid advancement in the spectroscopy techniques related to materials analysis, parallel developments in the ion-beam methods have been made concomitantly generating a great deal of current popularity for their uses in the analyses of materials.

The conference will highlight the perception of spectroscopy from fundamental aspects to applications in wide-ranging interdisciplinary areas, followed by imparting a rigorous insight on the proficient use of various state-of-the-art analytical techniques. I am confident your knowledge, expertise and lively participation with scientific fortitude will turn the conference into a global inclusive scientific event. I also hope you will enjoy the conference to a great extent and your vibrant interaction through mutual exchange of innovative ideas will be of immense scientific accomplishment not only to the delegates of the conference but also to the entire spectroscopy community of the world. I wish the conference a grand success!

“Spectroscopy can probably answer the question, ‘Is there anybody out there?’ Are we alone? ”                                                                                                                             - Garik Israelian

What is Spectroscopy?

The term “Spectroscopy” is derived from a Latin word “spectron” which means spirit or ghost, and a Greek word “skopein” which means looking into the world. Spectroscopy is the field of analysis of the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation. Spectroscopy is the process where different techniques are employed to obtain data on the structure and properties of matter which is used for solving a wide variety of analytical problems.

Types of Spectroscopy

  • X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)
  • Infrared absorption spectroscopy (IRS)
  • Ultraviolet and visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-VIS)
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR)
  • Raman Spectroscopy

Applications of Spectroscopy

  • Spectroscopy in Environmental Analysis, Biomedical Sciences, and Astronomy to obtain details about the composition, density, temperature and other physical processes of a certain astronomical object.
  • Raman spectroscopy can result in the vibrational spectrum of a certain analyze (often referred to as its “fingerprint”), which then allows straightforward identification and interpretation.
  • X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) also known as Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) is the most widely used surface analysis technique because it can be applied to a broad range of materials and provides valuable quantitative and chemical state information from the surface of the material being studied.
  • IR Spectroscopy to determine functional groups in molecules. It measures the vibrations of atoms, and based on this it is possible to determine the functional groups.
  • NMR analytical chemistry technique used in quality control and research for determining the content and purity of a sample as well as its molecular structure.

What are Analytical Techniques?

The techniques which are utilized to determine the concentration of a particular chemical compound or chemical element. Analytical Techniques and instrumentation provide the foundation for all the measurements made in a modern clinical chemistry laboratory.

Types of Analytical Techniques

The majority of Analytical Techniques fall into one to four basic disciplines within the field of analytic chemistry:

Application of Analytical Techniques

Track 1: Mass Spectroscopy

Spectroscopy is the study of the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation. Historically, spectroscopy originated through the study of visible light dispersed according to its wavelength, by a prism. Later the concept was expanded greatly to include any interaction with radioactive energy as a function of its wavelength or frequency. Spectroscopic data are often represented by an emission spectrum, a plot of the response of interest as a function of wavelength or frequency.

Track 14: (HPLC) High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is different and another type of column chromatography that pumps a sample mixture or analyte in a solvent at high pressure through a column with chromatographic packing material. HPLC has the ability to analyze, and separate compounds that would be present in any sample that can be dissolved in a liquid in trace concentrations. Because of this advantage, HPLC is used in a variety of industrial and scientific applications, such as pharmaceutical industry, environmental, forensic science, and chemicals. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography has brought a lot of advantages in the department of food analysis and also in the analysis of various fat-soluble vitamins. HPLC is also used in DNA fingerprinting and bioinformatics.

Track 15: Spectroscopy tools in Nanotechnology

The most intriguing part for researchers is the complex properties which are shown by nanoparticles and nanostructures. Microscopic methods such as SPM and electron microscopes are available to observe nanomaterials at the nanoscale level but the chemical, structural and optical properties are not possible with these instruments. This is where spectroscopic characterization techniques are used to investigate the properties of the nanomaterials.

Spectroscopy is important in a lot of sciences including chemistry, physics, and astronomy, because it allows you to tell a lot of information about an object simply be the amounts and types of light (or actually electromagnetic radiation) it contains. Basically, spectroscopy studies the light emitted (or passed through an object). If you look at the whole spectrum of electromagnetic radiation from an object, you will notice that certain frequencies of light are given off more or less than others. Often this pattern is very unique, and forms a type of "fingerprint" for the materials that are in the object, especially individual elements or ions. MR spectroscopy, Spectroscopy, Spectroscopy of Nano-Structures, Mass spectrometry screening system.
